✈️ Incident Overview


Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner (registration VT‑ANB), departed Ahmedabad at 1:38 pm IST, bound for London Gatwick. It crashed roughly 30 seconds after takeoff into the hostel block of B. J. Medical College near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.  


The aircraft had 230 passengers and 12 crew on board. Tragically, 241 people on the flight and at least 28 on the ground perished—a total of around 269 fatalities.  



๐Ÿ™ Only Survivor


Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national of Indian origin seated at 11A, is the sole survivor. He walked out of the wreckage with minor injuries.  



๐Ÿ•Š️ High-Profile Casualty & Ground Impact


Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, en route to London.  


The crash hit hostel quarters and a cafeteria for medical students and staff, resulting in at least 28 ground fatalities and over 60 injuries.

The pilot issued a Mayday call moments before communication was lost.  



Rescue teams  from the NDRF, IAF, BSF, NSG, along with dozens of ambulances and fire engines, responded at the scene.  


The Flight Data Recorder (“black box”) has been recovered. India’s AAIB, supported by UK, US, Boeing, and GE Aerospace teams, are conducting the investigation.

PM Narendra Modi described the crash site and expressed his condolences on X; he’s coordinating relief efforts.  


King Charles III and PM Keir Starmer of the UK, among others, offered their sympathies.  



⚠️ Safety Measures


The DGCA has mandated enhanced inspections of all Air India Boeing 787‑8/9 aircraft starting June 15.  


Discussions are underway focusing on a potential engine thrust malfunction soon after takeoff.
